In preparation for our upcoming art project, students have been learning about the elements of shapes. We learned about the dot family, the circle family, and the line family. We had a chance to practice each of the families, and some of us learned how to use a ruler today! We talked about the thickness of lines and how it changes how the shapes look. We watched a short youtube video to help us understand the basics elements of art.

Watch the youtube video here:
In the video, we learned about the difference between geometric and organic artwork. We quickly noticed that the easiest difference to point out between the two, was the difference of lines.

We are excited to share our project with you at conferences next week! If you haven't booked for a time slot, please book one here: https://webapps.cbe.ab.ca/MyAccount/Account/LogOn?ReturnUrl=%2fMyAccount%2f

Reminders: Tomorrow is our library day and Fun lunch! If you ordered fun lunch for your child, please only send a snack. If you did not order, please send a full lunch and visit www.healthyhunger.ca to order in the future.

Students at Kenneth D. Taylor are focusing on the following values. They are helpful, empathetic, accepting of others, responsible and truthful 💜 Our students have H.E.A.R.T! Throughout the year we will have opportunities to learn about each of these values so we can practice them each day!

Today we focused on helping

How can you be helpful? Or how have you been helped?

I can help someone get up if they fall - Nadia
Help my sister open the door - Claire
I can help the teacher and my learning by listening - Amelia
Helping someone clean up - Bronwyn
My dad helped me when I slipped - Mark
I helped my sister feel better by getting her an icepack (bag of peas) - Paige
Sitting cross cross so people behind me can see and raising my hand instead of yelling out - Grayson
My grandma asked me if I was ok when I tripped on the stairs - Danica
My dad tried to cheer me up when I twisted my ankle - Hayden
I help my little sister all the time with doing stuff - Khloe
My mom helps me clean my books and toys - Maliaka
My brother helps me all the time - Maryam

Ask your child, how can you help at home? How can you help at school?

To help us think of other ways to help each other, we read the story, I am a Leader! While reading the story again with your child, on each page ask: who is the character helping? Themselves? Others? The community?

We have been continuing our exploration of colours - shades and tints. Today we did an ordering activity where we put colours in order from lightest to darkest. After we had them in the right order, students glued them in their visual journals and labeled the pictures.

Please ask your child - which colour is the lightest? Which colour is the darkest?

Today we also talked about the 'at' family. Can you think of any other words that are part of the 'at' family?

Dear Parents,

An email went home to sign up for Student Led Conferences taking place Feb 2 and 3. If you did not receive this email, please let me know at sibrar@cbe.ab.ca. Please feel free to contact me at any time. I can be reached by phone (403-817-3504), by email sibrar@cbe.ab.ca or simply pop in before or afterschool. ☺

Today we discussed the vowel a and the sounds it makes. Here are some examples with the different sounds of letter a.

We also discussed the digraph, 'ch' and brainstormed some words that have 'ch' in them! Here is what we came up with!
can you think of some others?

Today we also started our self-assessment rubric work. Students began by brainstorming what red work looks like, sounds like and feels like. Students used pictures and words to describe red work. Through this discussion, we noticed that someone who has red work is is feeling red may be angry or upset. Maybe they're struggling with their work or aren't quite sure what to do. We brainstormed some things we can do to help us during this time - ask me what I can do if I need help.

In our groups we have started to work on green work. We will share our work with you tomorrow. For now...enjoy our progress! We are excited to share this work with you at student led conferences in the upcoming weeks!
