Today we discussed our three words from yesterdays blog. Please ask your child to explain in their words the following three words:

  1. Hibernate
  2. Migrate
  3. Tolerate

Over and Under the Snow is a story within a story.  The story is about a girl and father cross country skiing through a forest.  The story within is what happens under and over the snow with animals during the winter months.  The illustrations also show what the animals are doing under and above the snow.  The book gives just enough detail about each animal to hook a student to want to learn more about them.

We learned that some animals, like the black bear and bees, hibernate

Some animals like the red fox and snowshoe hares, tolerate the harsh temperatures

Can you think of any animals that migrate during the winter months?

This story peaked our interested and we generated a number of wonders about other animals, and what they do during the cold harsh winter months.

Below are some wonders from wonderopolis.org that you may want to explore with your child after reading the book.

Pictures from  yesterday...

We watched a Brain Pop video on doubles and the Characters Moby and Annie were adding doubles with shells...yesterday, we did the same!

Today we read I Wish You More. Mrs. Fraser asked us to help decorate the gym with lightbulbs and on these lightbulbs we made our own wishes! We quickly realized we have some very kind, thoughtful and caring students in our class. Here are our wishes...

Sorry for the short blog today..

What a chilly day!

Thank you for dressing warmly for our weather. We spent most of our morning outside, and part of our recess lunch outside. Please continue to send students ready for our chilly weather as we would like to get some fresh air when possible.

Today we practiced kindness by writing thank you notes to people we are thankful for!

Thank you for supporting your child in dressing appropriately for the weather each day:) We have asked that students who wish to roll around in the snow and slide down the hill in the snow, must have snow pants.
Here is a little visual to help with getting ready in the morning!
Next week they are predicting colder weather temperatures. If the temperature drops below -19, students will be asked to come straight inside in the morning, and not go out at recess or lunch recess.

Our Random Acts of Kindness!
This month we have come up with a list of things we will do throughout the month to show kindness at our school. Here are the things we came up with!
Today we went around the class and complimented each other! We talked about how we felt afterwards, and how we all were so happy! Can't wait for the rest of the month!

Scholastic Book Orders Due Tomorrow!
Today we practiced playing cooperative games in the classroom. Students were given no instructions and were asked to work together to play snakes and ladders. They had to decide as a group who went first and the rules of the games. We learned a few things about working in groups!
  1. It doesn't always matter who goes first.
  2. We need to think of a fair way to decide the order in which we play. We could play: who doesn't blink, rock paper scissors, black shoe, roll the dice to see who has the biggest number
  3. We need to use kind words and cheer each other on
  4. It doesn't matter who 'won' the game as long as we all had fun!

Playing snakes and ladders is a great way for students to practice subitizing using the dice and counting using a 100s chart.

We also practiced with shades and tints!
