Making 10
Students have been working with blocks to come up with number sentences that make/equal 10. Students had been working diligently to think of all the different ways they can make it. Knowing different arrangements of 10 will help students when adding and subtracting. In math we always try to work together to learn from each other. Here are some pictures of us working with our math buddy!
You can support your child at home by thinking of all the ways to make 10! Use beans from your kitchen as counters!
Today we read The Owl and the Raven: An Inuit Legend. Please ask your child: what happened between the Owl and the Raven?
We also discussed the word Legend: A legend is a semi-true story, which has been passed on from person-to-person and has important meaning or symbolism for the culture in which it originates. A legend usually includes an element of truth, or is based on historic facts, but with 'mythical qualities'.
Other words to describe a legend: myth or fable
Does your family have any legends to share? Share them with your child!
New library books came home today! Inside the book bag you will find a few questions to discuss with your child when finished reading. These questions have been provided by Miriam Trehearne, a Calgary native literacy specialist. Miriam's strategies are all research based and are known to be high-yield strategies to support students in literacy. Our school has been very fortune to work with her and use her books as resources. These particular questions or prompts help students with higher-order thinking and inferences.
๐Thank you for supporting your child with reading (library books and on Raz-Kids) and IXL at home! ๐
